It is recommended you call before arriving at any pantry.
Some food pantries may require proof of address, ID, or eligibility; others may operate with fewer restrictions in emergency. Confirm ahead.
Here are some questions you can ask:
“What are your hours this week?” (Some sites change schedule when demand increases)”
“Is the service is walk-in or appointment only?”
“Do I need to bring ID or proof of address or a referral?”
“Do you offer “client-choice” (you pick what you want) vs. pre-packaged”?
“How many times can I use your service (monthly / per year)?”
“Do you have fresh produce, frozen meat/dairy, or just canned goods?”
“Are there special services/supports for federal workers or people losing SNAP/FoodShare benefits?”
“Do you deliver or have a mobile pantry in our area (especially if transportation is limited)?”
Use any remaining FoodShare (SNAP) benefits you have before a potential pause. The state warns that FoodShare payments, which are 100 % federally funded, could be delayed or halted if the shutdown continues. Gov. Evers Statement
Call 2-1-1 (Wisconsin’s free helpline) to ask for the most up-to-date local food assistance options in your county. References state “Call 211 to find out about other sources of food assistance in your area.” Wisconsin Department of Health Services
If you are a federal worker without pay, check for emergency support programs and local food pantry networks that can help bridge the gap.
Consider reaching out to your county’s Human Services or Aging & Disability Resource Center: even if benefits are paused, local emergency food programs often continue.
