We’re currently at war with Iran; however, no one voted on it. Congress had three chances to vote to stop this, but instead, they handed over their constitutional authority to one person. I believe we need a strong, engaged America that leads through diplomacy, upholds international law, and doesn’t pick fights with other countries. That will end up costing American lives and dollars. Additionally, I believe Wisconsin farmers, manufacturers, and small businesses deserve a trade policy that opens markets. The relentless tariffs imposed by the president is hurting the American economy, which also affects the world economy by stunting markets with countries around the globe.
Diplomacy First
The Constitution gives Congress the power to declare war for a reason. War is the most serious decision a nation makes, and it belongs to the people’s representatives, not to one executive acting alone.
Since World War II, that principle has steadily eroded. Congress has ceded its authority across more than 11 military engagements, including Korea, Vietnam, Iraq, and Afghanistan. The War Powers Act of 1973 was supposed to serve as a check. It hasn’t worked. We’re still in the same pattern, just with newer conflicts.
When the House voted in March 2026 on a resolution that would simply have stated Congress’s view that the president cannot initiate major combat operations against Iran on his own authority, the motion to block that resolution passed 219 to 212, breaking almost entirely along party lines. Glenn Grothman voted with the majority to block it, he voted for war. He chose party loyalty over the Constitution.
I would have voted the other way. It is time to stop the endless overseas wars, a sentiment which a certain president professed to share, before proving ultimately how inconsequential the lives of our children are to him. The American people, including the families of the service members now fighting in Iran, deserve a Congress that actually shows up to do its job.
